Announced on September 8, the financing brings the company\u2019s total funding since its establishment in 2021 to approximately $680 million.<\/p>\n<p>The round was co-led by U.S. venture capital firm Bessemer Venture Partners, London-based Atomico and the Scaleup Europe Fund, a European growth investment fund managed by Swedish private equity group EQT. Existing investors also participated.<\/p>\n<p>The Series C follows a \u20ac150 million Series B completed in late 2024. The latest round gives The Exploration Company additional capital to pursue two technically demanding programs: a reusable spacecraft capable of returning cargo from orbit and a high-thrust methane engine intended for a future European heavy-lift launch vehicle.<\/p>\n<h2>Nyx Demonstration Flight Targeted for 2028<\/h2>\n<p>The company\u2019s immediate priority is Nyx, a reusable capsule designed to transport cargo to low Earth orbit and return payloads safely to Earth. The first demonstration flight is scheduled for 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Later versions of Nyx are intended to carry astronauts to and from low Earth orbit and deliver cargo to the lunar surface. Achieving those objectives would require the company to develop increasingly capable life-support, abort, guidance, thermal-protection and landing systems beyond those needed for its initial uncrewed cargo missions.<\/p>\n<p>The ability to return cargo is an important distinction in the orbital logistics market. Numerous spacecraft can deliver supplies or deploy payloads in orbit, but relatively few vehicles can survive atmospheric reentry and bring substantial cargo back to Earth. That capability is particularly relevant to the International Space Station and planned commercial space stations, which will need regular transportation for scientific samples, manufactured products and reusable equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The Exploration Company has said it has secured more than $2 billion in contracts and commitments from public and private customers, including arrangements with the European Space Agency and commercial space station operators. However, the combined figure includes both contracts and commitments, making it unclear how much represents firm contracted revenue and how much is conditional or non-binding future business.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Executive H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Huby said the financing would support efforts to fly Nyx to the International Space Station and return it safely to Earth while accelerating development of Storm.<\/p>\n<h2>Storm Targets Reusable Heavy-Lift Propulsion<\/h2>\n<p>Part of the new capital will fund Storm, a reusable high-thrust rocket engine using liquid oxygen and biomethane. The engine is intended to provide the propulsion foundation for a future reusable European super-heavy launcher capable of placing as much as 40 tonnes into low Earth orbit while operating in a reusable configuration.<\/p>\n<p>The company plans to conduct subscale thrust-chamber and pre-burner tests in the coming months. Those activities are expected to be followed by an oxygen-rich power-pack test and testing of a workhorse engine over the next several years.<\/p>\n<p>An oxygen-rich staged-combustion system can support high performance but imposes demanding requirements on turbomachinery, materials and combustion stability. Components must withstand high pressures and oxygen-rich hot gas, creating substantial engineering and manufacturing challenges before a flight-ready engine can be produced.<\/p>\n<p>The Exploration Company briefly referred to a reusable heavy-lift rocket called Yrene on its website in June. Published imagery appeared to depict a vehicle powered by nine Storm engines. A company spokesperson subsequently characterized Yrene as a long-term concept and said the company\u2019s short- and medium-term priorities remained Nyx and the propulsion program. References to the launcher were later removed from the website.<\/p>\n<p>Separating engine development from a near-term commitment to a complete launch vehicle allows the company to mature propulsion hardware before undertaking the much larger cost of launcher development, infrastructure construction and flight testing. It could also leave Storm available for other European launch projects if the engine reaches operational maturity before The Exploration Company proceeds with its own rocket.<\/p>\n<p>The next program milestones are the planned subscale thrust-chamber and pre-burner trials, followed by the oxygen-rich power-pack and workhorse engine tests.
