Led by the China Geological Survey, the project represents a major milestone in China-Saudi geoscience cooperation and provides new geological data for mineral exploration and mining investment in Saudi Arabia.

The 1:100,000-scale geological mapping project covers approximately 600,000 square kilometers of the Saudi Arabian Shield. Described as the world’s largest geological mapping technical service project of the 21st century, it is a key cooperation program under the Belt and Road Initiative and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The project is designed to clarify the region’s tectonic framework, geological evolution and mineralization patterns through systematic, high-resolution mapping.

The 24 maps released in the first batch cover a combined area of 70,800 square kilometers and include major gold, copper, zinc, chromium and rare-metal mineralization belts across the Arabian Shield. They represent Saudi Arabia’s first systematic, large-scale and high-precision geological mapping products for the region.

Area Covered by the First Batch of Geological Mapping Results

Each map is supported by an integrated package comprising a professional geological map, a technical report and a spatial database. The resulting data have been integrated into Saudi Arabia’s national geoscience database portal, where they are available to government agencies, research institutions and mining companies. The information can support mineral exploration, land-use planning and geological hazard prevention.

Digital Mapping and Multisource Interpretation

The project used a digital and intelligent geological mapping workflow based on GoField, a field geological data acquisition system developed by the Chinese project team. Remote sensing, geophysical and geochemical data were combined for integrated geological interpretation.

A multilevel quality-control system was established across the full production chain, including preliminary geological map compilation, field mapping, sample testing, final map preparation and report writing. All deliverables were monitored throughout the process by an international third-party supervision organization and underwent phased acceptance inspections.

The Saudi Geological Survey said the high-precision mapping results have significantly strengthened the country’s basic geological capabilities and provide critical data support for the transformation and development of its mining industry.

The project was led by the Xi’an Center of the China Geological Survey, with participation from the Institute of Geology of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences and several other affiliated institutions, including the Nanjing, Shenyang and Wuhan centers of the China Geological Survey. Geological exploration organizations from Shandong, Guangxi, Gansu and Jiangsu, as well as Chang’an University and Northwest University, also contributed to the work.

Chinese and Saudi teams conducted joint field operations, practical training and technical workshops. Saudi geological technicians, particularly younger professionals, participated in the project’s full workflow, supporting technology transfer, knowledge sharing and the development of Saudi Arabia’s domestic geoscience workforce.

The early release of foundational geological data is also expected to improve the information available to international and domestic mining companies assessing exploration and development opportunities in Saudi Arabia.

China and Saudi Arabia plan to continue mapping additional areas of the Arabian Shield while expanding cooperation in geoscience data sharing, technical exchanges and mining-related industrial activities. The partners said the work will support implementation of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and contribute to deeper bilateral cooperation under the Belt and Road framework.

For mining and geoscience organizations seeking to apply satellite data to geological mapping and mineral exploration, STARPATH GLOBAL provides cost-effective Earth observation imagery tailored to specific operational requirements.
