The disclosure is the Pentagon\u2019s most explicit public acknowledgment that operational U.S. space-control systems are already deployed in orbit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Space Force now has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile adversary action,\u201d Meink said during his opening keynote address.<\/p>\n<p>Meink described the capability as a response to counterspace threats developed by China and Russia over more than a decade. Both countries have demonstrated technologies that could disrupt, disable or destroy satellites, including electronic warfare systems, cyber capabilities, direct-ascent anti-satellite missiles and spacecraft able to conduct close-proximity operations.<\/p>\n<p>The secretary provided no information about the weapons\u2019 design, number, orbital regime, launch history or operational status beyond confirming their presence in orbit. He also declined to say whether they produce kinetic or non-kinetic effects, whether they have been tested or what targets they are intended to counter.<\/p>\n<p>During a media roundtable after the keynote, Meink said his wording had been carefully chosen. Publicly confirming the weapons\u2019 existence supports deterrence, he argued, while releasing technical or operational details could reduce their effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Meink framed the systems as defensive capabilities intended to preserve U.S. freedom of action in space. He said dependable access to space-based services is essential not only for military operations but also for economic activity and civilian infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Satellites support missile warning, intelligence collection, navigation, communications, weather forecasting and command-and-control functions across the joint force. Disrupting those services could impair operations in every other military domain, making the defense of orbital assets a central element of U.S. planning for a conflict with a technologically capable adversary.<\/p>\n<p>The term \u201cspace control weapon\u201d does not identify a specific mechanism. Space-control operations can encompass systems that detect and track threats, interfere with hostile satellite links, conduct cyber operations, maneuver near another spacecraft or physically disable a target. Effects may be temporary and reversible, such as electronic disruption, or permanent.<\/p>\n<p>Meink\u2019s use of \u201con-orbit\u201d distinguishes the newly acknowledged capability from terrestrial counterspace systems. The U.S. military has previously discussed ground-based equipment designed to interfere with adversary satellite communications, but it has historically disclosed far less about weapons stationed in space.<\/p>\n<p>The Space Force\u2019s 2025 Space Warfighting framework divided counterspace operations into orbital warfare, electromagnetic warfare and cyberspace warfare. The document reflected a broader shift toward discussing space as a contested military domain in which the service must defend friendly capabilities while being able to deny an adversary the effective use of its own systems.<\/p>\n<p>Meink did not specify where the operational weapons fit within that framework. The absence of technical details also prevents an assessment of whether the systems are dedicated weapons, defensive payloads hosted on other spacecraft or satellites with multiple surveillance, maneuver and counterspace functions.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Meink highlighted two orbital programs associated with the Pentagon\u2019s Golden Dome missile-defense architecture: Space-Based Interceptors and a Space-Based Air Moving Target Indication constellation.<\/p>\n<p>The Space-Based Interceptor program is intended to evaluate orbital systems capable of engaging missile threats during flight. Meink said the effort had advanced from initial contracts to flight-ready hardware in less than a year. Contractors are progressing through a staged competition covering component testing, prototype development, in-space demonstrations and integration with the wider Golden Dome architecture, with an initial capability potentially targeted for 2028.<\/p>\n<p>He did not identify the operational space-control weapons as Space-Based Interceptors, and the interceptor program\u2019s disclosed development schedule indicates that the two references should not be treated as confirmation of the same system.<\/p>\n<p>The Space-Based Air Moving Target Indication program, meanwhile, is intended to add orbital tracking of aircraft and other moving airborne targets to missions traditionally performed by crewed surveillance platforms. The Space Force is working with the National Reconnaissance Office on the constellation to improve coverage and reduce reliance on aircraft operating within range of advanced air defenses.<\/p>\n<p>Meink said the first satellites associated with that effort were scheduled to launch in September, although the service has not disclosed the initial spacecraft count or the constellation\u2019s planned scale.<\/p>\n<p>No timetable was provided for further disclosure about the on-orbit space-control weapons.
