Announced on September 21, the agreement expands Exolaunch beyond conventional satellite deployment into microgravity research, in-space manufacturing and return-to-Earth transportation.

Exolaunch will aggregate experiments and manufacturing payloads from multiple customers, providing an end-to-end service covering technical integration, contracting, logistics, operations and regulatory coordination. The company is targeting biotechnology and pharmaceutical developers, life-science researchers, advanced-materials companies, government agencies and research institutions.

Potential payloads include pharmaceutical and biotechnology investigations, semiconductor-material research, crystal-growth experiments, optical-fiber manufacturing, technology demonstrations and other processes that could benefit from microgravity. Exolaunch has begun engaging customers and strategic partners for the 2029 flight.

The company is also evaluating whether to develop or acquire additional hardware needed to accommodate customer payloads inside Starfall. Such equipment could include standardized experiment enclosures, mechanical and electrical interfaces, environmental-control hardware and systems for operating payloads while in orbit, although Exolaunch has not disclosed a final hardware architecture.

Starfall is SpaceX’s reentry platform for carrying experiments or manufactured products through orbit and returning them to Earth. Starship will provide launch transportation, while Starfall will protect the returning payloads during atmospheric reentry. The platform is designed to return as much as 1,000 kilograms of cargo, providing substantially more capacity than the small reentry capsules now being developed for individual commercial missions.

That return capability distinguishes Starfall missions from conventional rideshare launches. On a typical satellite rideshare flight, Exolaunch integrates spacecraft with a launch vehicle and deploys them into orbit. The 2029 mission will require the company to manage payloads throughout a complete launch, orbital-operation and recovery cycle.

The arrangement therefore extends Exolaunch’s existing aggregation model into a new market. Instead of requiring each research organization or manufacturer to procure an entire spacecraft and independently manage launch and reentry, Exolaunch plans to combine multiple payloads on one mission and manage their shared technical and operational requirements.

Exolaunch has worked with SpaceX since 2020, integrating and deploying hundreds of customer satellites across dozens of Falcon missions. Its experience with SpaceX’s Transporter rideshare program has given it a customer network spanning commercial operators, governments, universities, research organizations and space agencies. The company expects those relationships to help it fill the considerably larger payload allocation available through Starfall.

The booking follows other commercial commitments to SpaceX’s emerging return-to-Earth service. Space Cargo Unlimited has reserved the full 1,000-kilogram capacity of a Starfall flight planned for 2028, while Redwire subsidiary SpaceMD plans to fly pharmaceutical research hardware on a Starfall mission. These commitments point to growing competition among integration companies seeking to connect life-science and advanced-manufacturing customers with reusable orbital transportation.

Commercial microgravity research has historically depended heavily on the International Space Station or smaller free-flying capsules. ISS access offers extensive laboratory infrastructure but is constrained by crew schedules, station resources and limited return capacity. Dedicated capsules can provide more control over mission timing, but their comparatively small payload capacities can restrict production scale and raise transportation costs per experiment.

A Starship-launched platform capable of returning up to one metric ton could enable customers to move from individual experiments toward larger pilot-production campaigns. The commercial case, however, will depend on Starship’s flight schedule, the frequency of Starfall missions, payload qualification requirements, reentry licensing and the time required to recover and return temperature- or time-sensitive materials to customers.

The mission also comes as EQT Private Equity works to acquire Exolaunch, with completion expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. Exolaunch said the investment firm’s international network and exposure to biotechnology companies could support customer development for the new service.

Exolaunch’s immediate task is to assemble the 2029 payload manifest and define the integration hardware required for different experiments. The flight will test whether the rideshare model that helped broaden access to satellite launches can also be applied to commercial microgravity research, orbital manufacturing and payload recovery.

Exolaunch has signed a contract with SpaceX to serve as payload integrator for a Starfall mission targeted to launch aboard Starship no earlier than 2029, marking the German company’s first commitment to Starship and its first mission involving the return of customer payloads from orbit.
