Operating in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) eliminates gravity-driven convection and buoyancy, allowing materials to form with fewer crystal defects and improved compositional uniformity.

The platform’s modular design utilizes interchangeable Smart Cartridges. This architecture allows Elethron to switch between different materials processing campaigns without needing to redesign the base payload infrastructure for subsequent missions.

Strategic Industry Significance

The deployment targets materials for critical downstream electronics, including power electronics, radio frequency (RF) systems, integrated photonics, advanced sensing, and extreme-environment electronics. By validating crystal growth in space, the project aims to establish repeatable, scalable manufacturing capabilities that yield higher electronic and optical performance than purely terrestrial processes can achieve.

“Microgravity has shown considerable potential in reducing defect formation and improving compositional uniformity as a crystal forms,” said Dr. Nick Bailey, Technical Director and Co-Founder of Elethron. “These are among the primary factors for achieving higher electronic and optical performance in next-generation semiconductor materials and devices, and ĀTAR allows us to extend our work on these materials into microgravity.”

Commercial Station Ecosystem

The partnership highlights Starlab’s strategy to support commercial in-space manufacturing ahead of the International Space Station’s planned retirement. Starlab Space—a global joint venture led by Voyager Technologies alongside Airbus, Mitsubishi Corporation, MDA Space, Palantir Technologies, and Space Applications Services—utilizes a single-launch, no-assembly-required architecture designed for rapid operational readiness after launch.

“Advanced semiconductor materials are foundational in developing next generation electronics in space and terrestrial systems,” said Jonathan Volk, Starlab’s director of advanced materials applications. “Elethron’s ĀTAR platform demonstrates how Starlab can support the transition from materials research in microgravity to repeatable processing capabilities in orbit.”

Pilot Campaign Timeline

During the initial six-month demonstration, Elethron will capture operational and process data to inform future scaled manufacturing campaigns and downstream product qualification for commercial and government customers.

Addressing the growing demand for high-performance semiconductor components, Elethron has secured a payload reservation aboard the commercial space station Starlab to test and refine advanced substrate manufacturing in microgravity.
