The declines followed Thursday’s announcement that SpaceX had agreed to acquire Grain Management’s entire nationwide 800 MHz wireless spectrum portfolio. Reuters reported a value of approximately $8 billion, citing a person familiar with the discussions. Grain did not disclose the purchase price, and the transaction remains subject to Federal Communications Commission approval and other closing conditions.

Elon Musk underscored the significance of the acquisition in a post on X on Friday.

“This is the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle needed for SpaceX to provide complete phone coverage in America,” Musk wrote.

The announcement puts fresh attention on AT&T CEO John Stankey’s recent dismissal of SpaceX’s mobile ambitions. In a September 29 interview with Axios, Stankey called the approach “not a viable strategy.”

“I think we’re the disruptor,” he said, pointing to AT&T’s investment in fiber infrastructure.

Stankey’s criticism focused on the economics and practical challenges of SpaceX’s proposed ground network, including placing small cellular base stations alongside Starlink dishes at homes and businesses. He argued that the deployment would face substantial costs and require property owners’ permission, while defending fiber as the stronger foundation for connectivity.

The spectrum agreement gives SpaceX another asset with which to pursue that challenge. Grain said the low-band portfolio would support next-generation direct-to-device services and enable Starlink Mobile to reach customers from both the ground and space.

That combination is central to the competitive stakes. A service integrating orbital coverage with a ground network could bring Starlink into more direct competition for everyday mobile customers. Friday’s reaction suggests investors are taking that possibility seriously, even as its commercial outcome remains uncertain.

Aaron Burnett, CEO of space finance and research company Mach33, pointed to another anticipated development in a Friday post on X.

“Remember that phones coming in 2027/2028 will be equipped with chipsets to handle Starlink mobile’s other higher throughput spectrum natively. Another part of the spectrum puzzle that’s already sorted but part of the conversation before SpaceX was public so has gone under the radar.”

Burnett’s comments highlight the importance of handset compatibility alongside spectrum ownership. If those devices arrive as he describes, they could expand the range of Starlink Mobile capabilities accessible directly through consumers’ phones.

There is also an unusual twist in the spectrum’s ownership history. Grain acquired the portfolio from T-Mobile in August through a transaction involving cash and Grain’s 600 MHz spectrum. Just two months later, it has agreed to sell the assets to a company pursuing a larger role in mobile connectivity.

The market reaction extended beyond the carriers. Tower operators moved higher as investors anticipated potential demand for terrestrial infrastructure. Crown Castle gained 15.6%.

The acquisition does not settle the questions Stankey raised. Spectrum ownership still has to translate into a network that delivers the capacity, reliability and economics needed to attract customers at scale. Although regulatory approval and execution remain ahead for SpaceX, the contrast in leadership communication is striking. Less than two weeks after AT&T’s chief executive dismissed SpaceX’s strategy, a major spectrum agreement was enough to send the country’s largest wireless stocks sharply lower.

AT&T fell approximately 10%, Verizon lost 9%, and T-Mobile tumbled 13% during the October 9th trading session.
