The proposed vehicle targets a payload capacity in the 100-tonne class to low Earth orbit (LEO), with a first stage powered by 33 liquid oxygen–methane engines, each in the 300-tonne-thrust class. It is intended to support crewed lunar landings and other deep-space missions.

Competition among China’s private rocket companies has largely focused on low Earth orbit. The emergence of SQX-9 signals that their ambitions are beginning to extend into deep space.

What does a 100-tonne-class LEO payload capacity mean? The Long March 5 family, China’s most capable operational launch vehicle family by LEO payload capacity, can carry approximately 25 tonnes. A 100-tonne capacity would be four times that figure, placing SQX-9 in the broad payload class targeted by SpaceX’s Starship and aligning its ambitions with lunar and Mars missions.

Clustering 33 engines is a technically demanding approach that has attracted considerable debate.

Starship’s Super Heavy booster uses 33 Raptor engines. Even Falcon 9’s nine-engine first stage once faced questions about whether more engines would mean lower reliability. Starship’s flight tests have demonstrated the feasibility of operating a large engine cluster, although overall reliability depends on fault tolerance, redundancy and effective control. iSpace’s proposed configuration of 33 engines, each in the 300-tonne-thrust class, appears to follow a similar approach.

The broader message is that leading companies in China’s private space sector are looking beyond launching satellites.

As competition for LEO launches intensifies and constellation deployment contracts increasingly concentrate among major state-owned aerospace organizations and leading private operators, companies are seeking new sources of growth. Deep-space exploration, crewed lunar missions and Earth–Moon transportation—fields long dominated by national space programs—are becoming subjects of preliminary research in the private sector.

Preliminary studies, however, do not amount to a formally approved development program. Nor does program approval guarantee a maiden flight.

The path from preliminary studies to a first launch could take five to ten years. That is a possible development horizon, rather than an announced SQX-9 schedule. Even so, the strategic choice matters: it gives investors, prospective employees and customers a clearer view of the company’s long-term ambitions. The start of SQX-9 studies could mark an early step toward a new generation of capabilities in China’s private space sector.

For international customers, these expanding ambitions also draw attention to China’s broader satellite manufacturing and supply capabilities.
