The spacecraft entered its planned orbit, completing the 672nd launch of China’s Long March rocket family.

Chinese authorities said Yaogan-50 03 will primarily support land surveys, crop yield estimation, and disaster prevention and mitigation. No details were released about the satellite’s payload, imaging capabilities, mass, orbital parameters or planned operational life.

China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation said the satellite was developed under the overall responsibility of its Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, also known as the Eighth Academy.

The mission was the third publicly announced Yaogan-50 launch of 2026. Yaogan-50 01 lifted off from Taiyuan on Jan. 13, followed by Yaogan-50 02 on March 15. Both spacecraft were launched aboard Long March 6A rockets and assigned the same publicly stated applications. Chinese authorities have not said whether the three satellites share the same platform or payload configuration, or whether the latest launch completes a wider deployment phase.

The Long March 6A is a new-generation medium-lift rocket that combines liquid-propellant core stages with four solid-fueled strap-on boosters. The vehicle made its inaugural flight in March 2022, becoming the first member of the Long March family to use a combined liquid-solid configuration.

CASC lists the rocket as capable of placing at least 4.5 metric tons into a 700-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit. That figure represents the launch vehicle’s rated capacity and does not identify the orbit or mass of Yaogan-50 03, which remain undisclosed.

The Long March 6A can support single-satellite launches and dense multi-payload missions using tandem, parallel, stacked, side-mounted and rideshare configurations. This flexibility allows operators to tailor payload integration to different spacecraft combinations while increasing the number of satellites deployed on individual missions.

The Long March 6A rocket stands at the launch site

The latest launch extended the Long March family’s record to 672 missions.
