BEIJING, Oct. 25. (China Space News) — As of October 19, the meteorological satellite Fengyun-2C had been in orbit for eight years.
Developed by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST), Fengyun-2C was designed for three years in space, but has continued to operate for a further five years.
The Fengyun-2 series is China’s first generation of geostationary meteorological satellites. The series includes four geostationary meteorological satellites, namely Fengyun-2C — China’s first geostationary orbit weather satellite — Fengyun-2D, Fengyun-2E and Fengyun-2F.
After operating at 105° degrees East Longitude for five years, Fengyun-2C was replaced by Fengyun-2E on November 25, 2009, and was then moved to 123.5° degrees East Longitude.
Fengyun-2C can provide continuous meteorological monitoring and has played an important role in weather forecasting and disaster reduction for China and other countries.
