Tata Sky Selects Broadcom for Ultra HD Set Top Boxes

[Via Satellite 07-28-2014] Tata Sky has opted for Broadcom’s BCM7252 High-Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC) H.265 system-on-chip (SoC) for Ultra-HD capable Set-Top-Boxes (STBs) in India. According to Broadcom, the SoC reduces video bandwidth use by 50 percent.

In collaboration with Technicolor, Tata Sky plans to mass-deploy Ultra-HD STBs throughout India in 2015. Broadcom’s SoC enables 4K resolution at 60 Frames Per Second (FPS). The device has a variety of interfaces capable of supporting front-end cable, Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS), satellite and 802.11ac Wi-Fi devices. The SoC also enables dual display, meaning it can present two video channels simultaneously using the same STB.
