Most progress in China’s commercial aerospace engineering in May focused on rocket and engine testing: Arrow Technology’s Yuanxingzhe 1 completed the full rocket pipeline mechanical environment test; Interstellar Glory Hyperbolic 3 successfully completed the drop shock performance assessment test; Huosheng Aerospace’s “Huosheng 1” liquid oxygen methane engine completed the hot test of a scaled prototype of the oxygen-rich precombustion chamber; Juqing Technology’s “Blazing” liquid oxygen kerosene engine completed multiple long-range hot tests.

In May, Falcon 9 launched 11 times and put 259 spacecraft into orbit, including 8 Starlink satellite launch missions and 212 Starlink satellites. From January to May 2026, Falcon 9 launched 62 times and put 1,550 spacecraft into orbit, of which 50 were Starlink satellite launch missions and 1,337 were Starlink satellites. On May 12, 2026, the spectrum transaction between SpaceX and EchoStar was approved, and approximately 65MHz of EchoStar’s spectrum resources were transferred to SpaceX. On May 21, 2026, SpaceX officially submitted the S-1 registration statement (prospectus) to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to start the initial public offering (IPO) process. On May 23, 2026, SpaceX carried out the 12th test flight of Starship, and Starship V3 made its debut. This test flight completed most of the set goals, but some aspects of the engine working status, booster return control and other aspects did not meet expectations. S39 exploded after splashing down in the Indian Ocean, and crashed into the Gulf of Mexico in an uncontrolled state with overweight boost.

Conclusion

Facing the window period for competition for frequency orbit resources, we must continue to promote the engineering implementation of recyclable rockets and rely on launch facilities such as Hainan Commercial Development and Dongfeng Commercial Aerospace Innovation Test Zone to create high-density, low-cost, and regular launch capabilities to meet the needs of large-scale constellation networking.
