The “GW” constellation is an important layout for my country in the field of space economy and future communications. It plans to launch 12,992 satellites (6,080 satellites in the GW-A59 sub-constellation, distributed in extremely low orbits below 500km; 6,912 satellites in the GW-A2 sub-constellation, distributed in a low-Earth orbit of 1,145km) to create an integrated space-space communication network dominated by my country and covering the world. On July 9, 2023, the “GW” constellation began its first launch. Starting from the second half of 2025, the construction progress of the “GW” constellation has accelerated significantly. As of March 15, 2026, the “GW” constellation has launched a total of 31 satellites/188 satellites (22 experimental satellites + 3 high-orbit operational satellites + 163 low-orbit operational satellites), with 29 successes and 1 failure. There are currently 184 satellites in orbit (18 experimental satellites + 3 high-orbit operational satellites + 163 low-orbit operational satellites).
Currently, among the satellites launched by the “GW” constellation, the satellite development units involved include the Fifth Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology (China Academy of Space Technology), the Eighth Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology (Shanghai Academy of Aerospace Technology), Galaxy Aerospace (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd., Microsatellite Innovation Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changguang Satellite Technology Co., Ltd., Beijing Micro-Nano Star Technology Co., Ltd., and China Aerospace Science and Technology Group Commercial Satellite Co., Ltd.
The rockets used include Long March 2C/Yuanzheng 1S, Long March 2D/Yuanzheng 3, Jielong 3, Long March 3B, Long March 12, Long March 5B/Yuanzheng 2, Long March 8A, Long March 6A, and Zhuque 2E.
1. Experimental satellites (22 launched, 18 in orbit)
As of March 15, 2026, the “GW” constellation has launched a total of 8 test satellites (22 in total), with 7 successes and 1 failure. Currently, 18 are in orbit.

At 19:00 on July 9, 2023, the satellite Internet technology test satellites No. 1 and 2 (2 in total) were successfully launched aboard the Long March 2C Y52/YZ-1S Y3 at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. These two satellites were developed by the Fifth Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology.
