Army Stands Up First Permanent Enlisted Space Operations Workforce

The creation of the career field gives the Army an enlisted track focused specifically on space operations. It marks the first time the service has built a permanent workforce of this kind for the domain.

More than 600 soldiers have entered the new specialty, according to a report dated October 3, 2026. The career field represents a dedicated Army space operations specialty rather than a temporary or ad hoc assignment.

The development shows space capabilities being pushed down into the ground services and reflects the military institutionalizing space as a day-to-day combat support function.

A key question going forward is how the Army’s space cadre divides labor with the Space Force.
