Space Kinetic Wins $50M Space Force Award to Develop Whirlwind Maneuvering System

The company describes a thesis rooted in applying drone economics to orbit, where payloads are cheap, responsive, and potentially disposable. Space Kinetic says it has spent years working with government partners to confirm the underlying physics before maturing the hardware. In November, it received a multimillion dollar DARPA contract to accelerate its architecture for asymmetric space-based missile defense, and it was selected for the SpaceWERX Adaptive and Intelligent Space Challenge in July.

Whirlwind flings small, ruggedized microsatellites from a host spacecraft at high velocities using centrifugal acceleration. The microsatellites carry their own propulsion and communications, but Whirlwind provides the majority of the initial Delta-V electromechanically, sidestepping the rocket equation. Cofounder and CEO Ryan Sullivan called it a space-based David sling, noting that humans have used centrifugal acceleration for a couple of millennia.

By decoupling the payload from the space vehicle, the company aims to shift the burden of maneuver from the payloads to the host, minimizing mass, cost, and complexity. Sullivan contrasted this with traditional satellites, which are built for multi-year useful lives. If a payload is cheap enough, he asked, what could you do with a useful life of just 30 minutes? The system is both regime and payload agnostic, with envisioned dual-use missions including sensor payloads for space domain awareness or electro-optical imaging, science probes, rapid-response communications nodes, and debris characterization.

Sullivan said the company is building an architecture where one space vehicle can enable many different missions and distribute capabilities where and when they are needed. He framed it around what he called the third space age, which he said demands better maneuverability, scalability, and marginal economics.

The company has not announced a timeline for testing Whirlwind on orbit, focusing instead on maturing the technology and holding integration talks with partners. It is hiring aggressively with a 50-person team, building out a presence in El Segundo while maintaining its New Mexico roots, including an Albuquerque prototyping lab and a multi-year Los Alamos National Laboratory partnership. Sullivan said the company is looking for people with institutional knowledge of how to build space programs, along with the flexibility, creativity, and curiosity required to build something fundamentally new.

The award reflects where the Space Force sees emerging capability gaps, with maneuverability defined as the ability to move satellites quickly and unpredictably in orbit. A render of the Whirlwind spacecraft in orbit was released alongside the announcement.
