SpaceX Alumni Have Founded More Than 1,300 Companies, Data Shows

SpaceX’s influence on the space industry extends well beyond its launch vehicles and spacecraft, with new data indicating the company has become a major source of entrepreneurial talent across multiple technology sectors.

According to data compiled by Crustdata from publicly available sources and shared with Payload, approximately 1,330 former SpaceX employees have gone on to found new companies, collectively raising around $9.2 billion in funding.

Alumni Launch New Ventures

While many former employees have founded businesses outside the space sector, including companies focused on artificial intelligence, defence, aviation and biotechnology, a significant number have established space technology startups.

Among the companies founded by former SpaceX employees are Firefly Aerospace, Relativity Space, Apex, Stoke Space, K2 Space, Impulse Space and Xona Space Systems.

The findings highlight SpaceX’s role not only as a spacecraft manufacturer but also as a training ground for engineers and entrepreneurs who later establish new technology businesses.

Talent Flows Across the Industry

Crustdata’s analysis also illustrates the movement of talent between major aerospace companies.

According to the data, more than 300 current Blue Origin employees previously worked at SpaceX, making Blue Origin the largest recipient of former SpaceX personnel.

The exchange is not one-sided. Crustdata found that approximately 130 current SpaceX employees previously worked at Blue Origin.

Engineering Recruitment

The data also provides insight into SpaceX’s recruitment patterns.

Among the 8,211 US-based SpaceX employees tracked by Crustdata, the largest groups of graduates came from the Georgia Institute of Technology (110 employees), the University of Michigan (108), Purdue University (92), the University of Texas at Austin (91) and the University of Southern California (85).

The figures suggest SpaceX continues to recruit heavily from leading engineering universities while contributing to a wider talent ecosystem that extends across the global space and technology industries.
