U.S. Space Command Names Grisham to Lead Headquarters Transition to Redstone Arsenal

U.S. Space Command has appointed Maj. Gen. Terry L. Grisham to lead its headquarters transition team as the command prepares to establish its permanent home at Redstone Arsenal, Commander Gen. Stephen Whiting said.

Grisham, an Alabama native with nearly four decades of military and civilian service, will serve as transition team director and head the Program Management Office in Huntsville. He will oversee relocation planning, infrastructure development and coordination with local and state authorities as the command shifts its headquarters operations.

“Terry’s nearly 40 years of expertise is informed by both his military service in the Alabama National Guard and his civil service with the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command,” Whiting said in a statement. “That experience – paired with his deep ties to the surrounding community – will prove invaluable as he leads our efforts on Redstone Arsenal to expeditiously relocate our warfighting organization while ensuring the perspectives of both our military and civilian workforce are clearly represented.”

The appointment was announced during Whiting’s visit to Redstone Arsenal, where he met with the on-site Project Management Office that is already handling early military construction and infrastructure planning. U.S. Space Command said the first members of its headquarters staff have already arrived in Huntsville as part of the initial transition phase.

Grisham said the assignment carries both professional and personal significance. “I’m thrilled to be joining the U.S. Space Command team as the on-ground lead to continue establishing our permanent headquarters on Redstone Arsenal,” he said. “It’s a great honor to represent the command in the community and, as a longtime resident of North Alabama, to serve as an ambassador welcoming our workforce home.”

Grisham will lead the so-called “South Detachment” transition team alongside Deputy Director Col. Raymond Ruscoe, who previously led U.S. Space Command’s European Command Joint Integrated Service Team. The group will manage construction requirements and workforce integration while coordinating closely with regional officials.

The decision to permanently base U.S. Space Command at Redstone Arsenal followed a years-long review process spanning multiple administrations and significant political debate. Senior U.S. defense officials reiterated their commitment to accelerating the move during a ceremony at Redstone last month.

“We are deadly serious in committing to cutting every piece of red tape and bureaucracy to get this headquarters established as quickly as humanly possible,” Pete Hegseth said at the event.

With Grisham now in place as the on-the-ground lead, U.S. Space Command said the relocation effort is entering a critical phase as it works toward fully operational headquarters facilities in Huntsville.
