Late yesterday, President Donald Trump appointed Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy to be interim Administrator of NASA, a move that was both surprising and unprecedented. Duffy will continue in his current job while also taking on the duties of NASA Administrator.
President Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, about the change at nearly 9:00 P.M. ET. Duffy is replacing former Director of the Kennedy Space Center, Janet Petro, as acting Administrator, who has served in the position since January.
The decision was sudden and a complete surprise, as all reports have shown President Trump was in approval of Petro’s performance in the role.
Secretary Duffy was confirmed as Secretary of Transportation on January 28 by the Senate and has been in charge of agencies like the FAA, which manages commercial spaceflight. However, that is the only experience he has in the space industry.
NASA, an independent government agency, is usually led by a Senate-confirmed Administrator who reports directly to the President.
The White House is still looking for a nominee to appoint to lead NASA in the future; however, so far, none have been announced. In a recent NASA employee town hall, officials stated it could take up to nine months to find one.
Jared Isaacman, tech billionaire and commercial astronaut, was the NASA Administrator nominee. However, Isaacman was caught in the crossfire between the fallout from President Trump and Elon Musk, and his nomination was dropped.
President Trump states the reason was that Isaacman was untrustworthy and donated to only Democratic campaigns. However, political donation records show Isaacman donating funds to candidates of both parties.
Space Explored’s Take
It feels absolutely absurd that a President who has mentioned how important space exploration is to his policy has had one of the biggest lapses in confirmed NASA leadership in recent history.
While the role of NASA Administrator has never been the highest priority, there has usually been a confirmed individual within the first handful of months of a new President.
The only logical reason I could come up with for the leadership change is that Petro was no longer seen as a “team player,” similar to Isaacman after Musk left the White House. Trump likely wanted to ensure that once budgets were passed, Duffy would execute the cuts as the President wished.
It’s unlikely NASA was informed of the change, as no press release was shared announcing it, and according to CBS’s Ryan Sprouse, a NASA spokesperson was unable to share more details on what would happen to Petro or if she would return to Kennedy Space Center.
