Tianjin

Tianjin’s aerospace industry can be traced back to 2008. The China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology built a “new generation launch vehicle industrialization base” in Tianjin’s Binhai New Area, focusing on undertaking the parts production, final assembly and testing tasks of the Long March 5, Long March 7, Long March 8 and other series of launch vehicles. The base is not only the core manufacturing platform for my country’s new generation rockets, but has so far assembled and delivered more than 340 Long March series rockets, providing strong support for my country’s manned spaceflight, lunar exploration projects, fire detection projects, space station construction, Beidou system and other major national aerospace projects. In the same year, the Tianjin base of the China Academy of Space Technology was settled in Binhai New Area, and has successively undertaken the R&D and manufacturing of a series of major aerospace missions such as the core module and experimental module of the China Space Station, the national satellite Internet system, and deep space exploration missions, further consolidating Tianjin’s strategic position in major national aerospace projects. After 2015, as private aerospace companies such as Aisida Aerospace and Yunyao Aerospace successively settled in Tianjin, Tianjin has entered a new stage of commercial aerospace development. Relying on the national team’s deep manufacturing foundation and industrial chain resources, Tianjin has gradually built an aerospace ecological system with coordinated development of “rocket development-satellite manufacturing-support” and has become an important aerospace manufacturing and innovation base in northern my country.

Industrial agglomeration

In recent years, Tianjin’s aerospace industry has shown a trend of high concentration and rapid development. In 2024, the added value of the city’s aerospace industry chain will grow by as high as 26%, and the added value of high-tech manufacturing above designated size will grow by 8.9%, leading the city’s industry. Among them, the equipment manufacturing industry is a pillar industry, and its added value accounts for 33.7% of the city’s designated industries. Among them, the railway, shipbuilding, aerospace and other transportation equipment manufacturing industries grew by 16.6%. According to data from “Satellite Applications”, Tianjin has added nearly 100 aerospace companies in recent years, bringing the total to nearly 150. It has initially built a complete commercial aerospace industry chain covering R&D, manufacturing, application and other links.

technological breakthrough

Tianjin has achieved a number of technological breakthroughs in the development, testing and verification of large aerospace structural parts. The large-scale composite fairing independently developed by Aista Aerospace has a diameter of 4200mm and a length of about 13 meters. It uses all-carbon fiber high-precision molding technology. It is currently the largest all-carbon fiber composite aerospace structural part in China and the largest fairing in the domestic commercial aerospace field. The large rocket base of the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology has the tallest fully enclosed full-arrow vibration test tower in Asia and the second-largest in the world. The tower is 93 meters high and has a maximum load capacity of 1,500 tons. It is dedicated to full-arrow modal testing of new-generation launch vehicles, including various flight status and substructure tests of the Long March 5, 7, and 8 series. Key performance verifications are completed here. The Tianjin AIT Center of the General Assembly and Environmental Engineering Department of China Academy of Space Technology has integrated a number of world-class test equipment, including the world’s third largest volume KM8 space environment simulator, the world’s largest thrust 140-ton electric vibration table, and the world’s second largest volume acoustic test system 4000 cubic meters high sound intensity reverberation chamber. It has successfully completed ground verification for many major national engineering tasks such as the Tianhe, Wentian, and Mengtian modules of the space station.

policy support

In 2018, Tianjin issued municipal-level special policies to promote the integration and accelerated development of the aerospace industry chain. The “Three-Year Action Plan for the Development of Tianjin’s Aerospace Industry (2018-2020)” clearly states that the scale of the city’s aerospace industry will exceed 15 billion yuan by 2020, and will focus on key tasks such as new-generation launch vehicles, space stations, and satellites. Since then, Tianjin has continued to focus on the aerospace industry, and has successively introduced about 13 industry and talent support policies, and established 4 industrial funds to create a good environment for industrial development in terms of policy guidance, financial support, and talent protection.

Industrial collaboration

In terms of collaborative platforms, Tianjin continues to strengthen the construction of industrial collaboration networks. The “Tianjin Aerospace Talent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Alliance” initiated by AVIC has attracted more than 120 companies and scientific research institutions to participate, building a collaborative platform covering talent introduction, technology transformation, and achievement incubation. At the same time, the “Aerospace Functional Structural Materials and Advanced Manufacturing Industry Chain Innovation Consortium” led by ASD Aerospace was officially launched, focusing on key materials and advanced process fields, and promoting the efficient integration of upstream and downstream resources in the industry chain. In terms of regional synergy, Tianjin gives full play to its manufacturing capabilities and port location advantages, and actively builds a Beijing-Tianjin aerospace industry synergy model of “Beijing R&D, Tianjin Transformation”. Relying on the national strategy of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei coordinated development, Beijing’s scientific and technological innovation capabilities, Tianjin’s manufacturing capabilities, and Hebei’s testing and undertaking capabilities are accelerating the integration, and the synergistic advantages continue to be released. In 2024, the GDP growth rates of the three places will be higher than the national average, and the total regional economy will exceed 11.5 trillion yuan, becoming an important engine for high-quality development in the country and building a more resilient and coordinated development support system for the commercial aerospace industry.

future development

Tianjin is relying on the profound technological accumulation and complete industrial foundation of “one arrow, one satellite” to actively connect with key national projects such as China’s Star Network, promote the accelerated transformation of the advantages of the aerospace “national team” into commercial aerospace capabilities, and build an industrial development path with Tianjin characteristics. At the local level, Dongli District took the lead in releasing the “Dongli District Three-Year Action Plan to Accelerate the Development of the Aerospace Industry (2025-2027)”, which plans to have 200 companies in the chain by 2027, with an average annual growth rate of more than 25% in industry scale.
