MDA Space introduced MDA Aurora Black on September 10, 2026, extending its software-defined Aurora satellite product line into the defence market with anti-jamming, GPS spoofing resistance and proximity-monitoring capabilities intended to protect military communications in contested environments.
The defence-focused configuration is available across MDA Space’s Aurora broadband and direct-to-device product lines. It combines the existing platform’s digitally reconfigurable communications architecture with additional cyber and physical security features designed for government customers seeking sovereign satellite communications infrastructure.
Aurora Black’s advertised capabilities include secure end-to-end connectivity, onboard anti-jamming technology, resistance to GPS spoofing, and perimeter and proximity sensing. Together, these systems are intended to preserve communications availability and spacecraft integrity when satellites face electronic interference, manipulated navigation signals or potentially threatening activity nearby.
Anti-jamming systems can help a satellite detect or mitigate deliberate radio-frequency interference, while spoofing resistance is designed to prevent false positioning, navigation and timing signals from corrupting spacecraft operations. Proximity sensing adds another layer of awareness by helping identify objects or activity around a satellite, an increasingly relevant requirement as governments focus on protecting orbital assets from inspection, interference and other potentially hostile behavior.
The product builds on MDA Aurora’s software-defined architecture, which uses digital processing and dynamic beamforming to create and redirect communications beams. Unlike satellites whose coverage patterns and capacity allocation are largely fixed before launch, software-defined spacecraft can adjust beams and redistribute capacity after entering orbit. That flexibility can allow operators to respond to changing operational priorities, demand concentrations or interference conditions without replacing the satellite.
MDA Space is offering Aurora Black as a configurable satellite platform rather than announcing a government-operated constellation or communications service of its own. Defence departments and satellite operators could therefore use the product as the spacecraft layer within sovereign or dedicated military communications networks.
“Aurora Black is designed to bring the agility of the company’s software-defined satellite into the defence domain,” MDA Space Chief Executive Mike Greenley said. He argued that high-volume production could help governments establish secure and sovereign military satellite communications on shorter timelines as tactical and strategic operations become more dependent on data connectivity.
The reference to volume production is commercially important. Military communications programs have traditionally relied on small numbers of highly customized satellites developed over long procurement cycles. Proliferated architectures require manufacturers to deliver larger fleets more quickly while maintaining security, reliability and mission assurance. A common platform spanning commercial broadband, direct-to-device and defence configurations could provide production and supply-chain advantages if customers accept greater standardization.
Demand for sovereign systems has also increased as governments reassess their dependence on foreign-owned or commercially controlled communications networks. Sovereignty in this context can include national control over spacecraft, network operations, encryption, spectrum use and user data. It does not automatically follow from purchasing a satellite platform, however; the degree of sovereignty would depend on the customer’s ground segment, network architecture, operating authority and control of supporting infrastructure.
Nathan de Ruiter, a senior partner at consulting and market intelligence firm Novaspace, said defence-specific satellite communications are becoming central to assured command and control. He cited company research showing that 107 proprietary defence satellites were launched worldwide in 2023 and that governments awarded industry more than $40 billion in space defence and security spending that year.
Aurora Black places MDA Space in a growing market for satellites capable of supporting distributed and resilient military networks. Its availability in both broadband and direct-to-device configurations could address requirements ranging from high-capacity connectivity for fixed and mobile terminals to communications with smaller tactical devices, subject to the spectrum, terminal and network designs selected by individual customers.
The announcement remains a product launch rather than a contract award. MDA Space did not identify an initial customer, disclose orders or provide delivery and deployment schedules. The next measure of Aurora Black’s market position will therefore be whether the company converts the platform’s security and production claims into funded government programs and firm satellite deliveries.
