MVG Introduces Space-Qualified Horn Antenna Solutions for Multi-Orbit Space Missions

Microwave Vision Group (MVG) has expanded its space-qualified antenna portfolio with a range of closed boundary quad-ridge horn antennas designed to support demanding satellite communication and measurement applications across LEO, MEO, and GEO missions. The space-qualified antennas are engineered to deliver wideband frequency coverage, dual linear polarization, and stable, repeatable RF performance – key requirements for satellite payloads, inter-satellite links, and space-to-ground communications. MVG positions the antennas as off-the-shelf solutions that reduce procurement complexity while meeting stringent space qualification standards.

The space-qualified antenna portfolio comprises two main models: the QR2000-SPQ, which operates across the 2 -18 GHz frequency range, and the QR18000-SPQ, designed for 18 – 40 GHz operation, together providing continuous wideband coverage from S-band through Ka-band. These two designs offer low VSWR, high port-to-port isolation, and strong cross-polarization discrimination, supporting reliable signal integrity across wide operating bandwidths. According to the technical data, gain ranges from 7 to 21 dBi for the lower-frequency model and 11 to 16 dBi for the higher-frequency version, making them suitable for a range of payload and test scenarios.

These quad-ridge horn antennas use a monolithic aluminum construction to minimize interfaces and moving parts, improving robustness during launch vibrations. Lightweight designs- approximately 0.8 kg for the QR2000-SPQ and 0.2 kg for the QR18000-SPQ- help satellite integrators meet payload mass constraints without compromising performance. Integrated high-precision coaxial transitions and standardized mounting flanges further simplify system integration.

MVG states that these antennas undergo comprehensive space qualification, including RF performance validation, mechanical shock and vibration testing, thermal cycling for extreme temperature environments, and outgassing tests in line with space environmental requirements. These qualifications ensure suitability for long-term operation in harsh orbital conditions. In addition, MVG also offers related services like calibration, maintenance, and customization to support mission-specific requirements.
