BlackSky Secures Seven-Figure NGA Contract Extension for AI Satellite Monitoring

BlackSky Technology Inc. has secured a seven-figure contract award under the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s (NGA) Luno A Facility Monitoring Delivery Order, extending the company’s work providing artificial intelligence-enabled monitoring services based on satellite imagery and analytics.

The funding renewal supports a four-year program focused on monitoring activity patterns and identifying anomalies at key facilities worldwide. The NGA renewed the contract after reviewing customer satisfaction and the performance of BlackSky’s high-cadence, AI-driven change detection capabilities.

Under the delivery order, BlackSky provides AI-enabled object detection and pattern-of-life analysis designed to identify changes in activity involving vehicles, aircraft, vessels, railcars and ground equipment. The monitoring covers a range of sites including ports, airfields, military installations and rail networks.

Chief Executive Officer Brian O’Toole said the contract extension highlights the importance of dependable commercial monitoring services.

“BlackSky’s successful performance on the Luno A program reflects the critical value of meeting customer commitments with proven, reliable commercial space-based monitoring services, especially in a strained budget environment,” O’Toole said.

He added that new satellite technology is expected to expand the system’s capabilities. “With the recent addition of advanced, very high-resolution Gen-3 satellites to our constellation our U.S. customers will have access to even more rapid, detailed and precise insights at machine speed and scale.”

BlackSky said it currently monitors more than 14 million square kilometers of the Earth’s surface for the NGA. The company’s AI tools are designed to enable more frequent and data-intensive searches across large geographic areas compared with traditional monitoring methods.

Work under the Luno A contract also contributes to the development of new analytical products that use artificial intelligence to process large data volumes, generate deeper insights and enhance predictive analysis. Since joining the program, BlackSky has received multiple delivery orders, including projects focused on automated detection of activity changes caused by human behavior.

The company operates a commercial space-based intelligence system combining its Spectra tasking and analytics platform with a proprietary low Earth orbit satellite constellation to monitor critical locations, economic assets and global events.
