SpaceX Launches Classified USSF-153 Mission for U.S. Space Force

SpaceX launched the classified USSF-153 mission for the U.S. Space Force aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, at 8:42 a.m. Pacific time on September 10. The mission carried an undisclosed number of national-security spacecraft toward an unannounced orbit.

The Falcon 9 lifted off from Space Launch Complex 4 East and flew south from California’s central coast. SpaceX ended its public webcast shortly after completing the first-stage recovery, withholding views and telemetry from the upper stage in accordance with the mission’s classified profile.

About eight and a half minutes after liftoff, the first stage landed on the drone ship Of Course I Still Love You in the Pacific Ocean. SpaceX did not publicly show the payload deployment or provide details about the satellites, their operators, orbital destination or mission objectives.

USSF-153 used booster B1081 on its 27th flight. The stage previously supported NASA’s Crew-7 and CRS-29 missions, the PACE Earth science mission, ESA’s EarthCARE satellite, the Transporter-10 and Transporter-13 rideshare missions, NASA’s TRACERS mission, two National Reconnaissance Office launches, the COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation FM3 mission and 16 Starlink deployments.

Recovering a booster after 27 missions illustrates how extensively SpaceX now employs flight-proven hardware for government launches as well as its internal constellation program. The company’s booster-reuse record stands at 37 flights, reached during a Starlink mission in August.

Payload and Orbit Remain Undisclosed

Neither the Space Force nor SpaceX identified the USSF-153 spacecraft or disclosed the intended deployment orbit. The plural references to payloads indicate that the mission carried more than one satellite, but their number and configuration remain classified.

The downrange recovery zone and rocket-stage drop areas reportedly resembled those used for previous Starlink Group 15 launches from Vandenberg. That similarity has prompted independent launch analysts to suggest that USSF-153 may have deployed a batch of spacecraft into low Earth orbit using a satellite architecture derived from SpaceX’s Starlink platform.

The assessment has not been confirmed by SpaceX or the U.S. government. Launch trajectory and maritime exclusion zones can provide clues about orbital inclination and mission energy, but they cannot independently establish the payload’s owner, sensors or operational purpose.

One possible connection is Starshield, SpaceX’s national-security business, which applies technology and production methods developed for Starlink to government missions. SpaceX describes Starshield broadly as supporting national-security customers through its satellite technology and launch capabilities. The company has not said whether USSF-153 was a Starshield deployment.

If the mission did carry multiple low Earth orbit spacecraft, it would align with the U.S. military’s broader shift toward proliferated constellations. Distributing capabilities across larger numbers of satellites can improve coverage, shorten revisit times and make an orbital network harder to disrupt through the loss of a small number of spacecraft. The classified nature of USSF-153, however, prevents a direct assessment of whether those considerations apply to this mission.

USSF-153 was SpaceX’s 104th Falcon 9 mission of 2026. Eighty of those launches have been dedicated to Starlink, which has grown to more than 11,000 active satellites. The remaining flights have supported commercial, civil and national-security customers, including missions for NASA, the Space Force and the National Reconnaissance Office.

The Space Force has not announced when the USSF-153 satellites will enter service or whether additional launches will follow under the same mission series.
